subject at hand is Rennie

September 2nd, 2010

At any rate, I became a reasonably proficient horseman and even learned to be at ease on horseback, but I never became an enthusiast. The sport was pleasant, but not worth the trouble of learning. Rennie and I covered a good deal of countryside during August; usually we rode out for an hour and a half, dismounted for a fifteen- or twenty-minute rest, and then rode home. By the time we finished unsaddling, grooming, and feeding the animals it was early afternoon: we would pick up the boys, ride back to Wicomico, and eat a late lunch with Joe, during which, bleary-eyed from reading, he would question Rennie or me about my progress.

But the subject at hand is Rennie’s clumsy force. On horseback, where there are traditional and even reasonable rules for one’s posture every minute of the time, it was a pleasure to see her strong, rather heavy body sitting perfectly controlled in the saddle at the walk or posting to the trot, erect and easy, her cheeks ruddy in the wind, her brown eyes flashing, her short-cropped blond hair bright in the sun. At such times she assumed a strong kind of beauty. But she could not handle her body in situations where there were no rules. When she walked she was continually lurching ahead. Standing still, she never knew what to do with her arms, and she was likely to lean all her weight on one leg and thrust the other awkwardly out at the side. During our brief rest periods, when we usually sat on the ground and smoked cigarettes, she was simply without style or grace: she flopped and fidgeted. I think it was her self-consciousness about this inability to handle her body that prompted her to talk more freely and confidentially during our rides than she would have otherwise, for both Morgans were normally unconfiding people, and Rennie was even inclined to be taciturn when Joe was with us. But in these August mornings we talked a great deal — in that sense, if not in some others, Joe’s program was highly successful — and Rennie’s conversation often displayed an analogous clumsy force.

On the other hand

September 2nd, 2010

Who are the postmodernists? By my count, the American fictionists most commonly included in the canon, besides the three of us at Tubingen, are Donald Barthelme, Robert Coover, Stanley Elkin, Thomas Pynchon, and Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Several of the critics I read widen the net to include Saul Bellow and Norman Mailer, different as those two writers would appear to be. Others look beyond the United States to Samuel Beckett, Jorge Luis Borges, and the late Vladimir Nabokov as engendering spirits of the “movement”; others yet insist upon including the late Raymond Queneau, the French “new novelists” Nathalie Sarraute, Michel Butor, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Robert Pinget, Claude Simon, and Claude Mauriac, the even newer French writers of the Tel Quel group, the Englishman John Fowles, and the expatriate Argentine Julio Cortázar. Some assert that such filmmakers as Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini, Jean-Luc Godard, and Alain Resnais are postmodernists. I myself will not join any literary club that doesn’t include the expatriate Colombian Gabriel García Márquez and the semi-expatriate Italian Italo Calvino, of both of whom more presently. Anticipations of the “postmodernist literary aesthetic” have duly been traced through the great modernists of the first half of the twentieth century — T. S. Eliot, William Faulkner, André Gide, James Joyce, Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann, Robert Musil, Ezra Pound, Marcel Proust, Gertrude Stein, Miguel de Unamuno, Virginia Woolf — through their nineteenth-century predecessors — Alfred Jarry, Gustave Flaubert, Charles Baudelaire, Stephane Mallamd, and E. T. A. Hoffmann — back to Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy (1767) and Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote (1615).

On the other hand, among certain commentators the sifting gets exceedingly fine. Professor Jerome Klinkowitz of Northern Iowa, for example, hails Barthelme and Vonnegut as the exemplary “postcontemporaries” of the American 1970s and consigns Pynchon and myself to some 1960ish outer darkness. I regard the novels of John Hawkes as examples of fine late modernism rather than of postmodernism (and I admire them no less for that). Others might regard most of Bellow, and Mailer’s The Naked and the Dead, as comparatively premodernist, along with the works of such more consistently traditionalist American writers as John Cheever, Wallace Stegner, William Styron, or John Updike, for example (the last of whom, however, Ihab Hassan calls a modernist), or those of most of the leading British writers of this century (as contrasted with the Irish), or those of many of our contemporary American women writers of fiction, whose main literary concern, for better or worse, remains the eloquent issuance of what the critic Richard Locke has called “secular news reports.” Even among the productions of a given writer, distinctions can be and often are invoked. Joyce Carol Oates writes all over the aesthetical map. John Gardner’s first two published novels I would call distinctly modernist works;

Let’s Relax Right Now

August 25th, 2010

It’s very easy to forget to relax during our hectic days and nights, during the time when we’re constantly trying to get things done. So many of us are spending so much time on our jobs and our extra tasks in life that we tend to forget to slow down and reassess what we’re doing and why.

So take a deep, slow breath. No, really–go ahead. Take a deep, slow breath, taking in as much air as you can as slowly as you can. Feel your lungs fill, and then hold the breath for five to ten seconds.

Let your breath out slowly, feeling the stress leave your body as you exhale. The hurry and the stress can ride out of your body and mind in the air that you breathe out, and if you can allow your mind to focus on the breathing, you can slow down those thoughts that are running around in your mind at about a million miles an hour.

Take in another deep breath, slowly and surely. Hold it for five to ten seconds, and then exhale slowly…slowly…slowly…

There are many important things in your life that you need to take care of, but if you take the time to relax and treat yourself well, you will find that these few minutes of relaxation can provide a huge benefit for you.

So take another deep breath, very slowly, and hold it in. Release it slowly and feel the tension leave your body with the air. If you do this ten to fifteen times, you’ll find yourself feeling energized, relaxed, and in a more positive state of mind.

Learning to relax is the greatest gift we can give ourselves, the benefits of taking a few minutes of our busy day to relax are many, relaxation brings us peace of mind, a calm emotional state of being, improved health, increased energy, and far less stress held within the body.

Poor Recordkeeping Can Create Problems

June 20th, 2010

There are many challenges that we face when trying to create and stay on a budget. One of the most common mistakes that I hear about most often from my clients is not maintaining good records. This is especially the case with spouses and joint checking or savings accounts. Joint accounts tend to have a greater number of problems because there is more than one person accessing the account.

China hopes Copenhagen conference achieve fair and feasible results

December 5th, 2009

China said Tuesday it hoped the upcoming Copenhagen Conference on climate change would achieve “fair and feasible” results.

China has advocated the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Kyoto Protocol, and the Bali Road Map, and held the principles of common but differentiated responsibilities, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang at a regular press conference.

“All documents or outcomes from the conference should be consistent with the provisions in these agreements, and would pave the way for the cooperation of the international community in the years to come,” Qin said.

He also reaffirmed the developed countries and the international community should pay enough attention to the concern of the developing countries.

“The developed nations should honor its commitment to accomplishing or establishing the medium-term emission reduction target on the one hand, and provide the developing nations with financing, technology transfer, and capability building support on the other hand,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said the developing nations should take appropriate actions that adapt to and will slow down climate change, in the light of their own national situation and under the sustainable development framework.

Representatives from China, Brazil, India and South Africa along with Sudan, the current chairman nation of G-77, met in Beijing on Nov. 27 to 28 to prepare for the Copenhagen Conference.

They agreed the outcome of the conference should include long-term cooperative actions on climate change, mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, adaptation to the impacts of climate change, as well as provision of financial and technological support.

“The agreements reflect the concern and advocate of the developing nations, and deserves great attention from the developed nations,” Qin said.

The 15th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will be held from Dec. 7 to 18 in Copenhagen of Denmark. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will attend the conference.

U.S. ambassador wants Okinawa issue solved expeditiously

December 4th, 2009

U.S. Ambassador to Japan John Roos on Friday urged Japan to find a quick solution to the impasse regarding the future of U.S. soldiers currently stationed in Okinawa.

The ambassador said he felt it is important that the two nations “resolve the current issue expeditiously” at a news conference in Tokyo.

Since the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) came to power in the summer, it has made it clear to Washington that it would like to see a “more equal” relationship with the United States.

The DPJ has said that despite the fact that an agreement was signed by the United States and the former governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), it would like to reassess what is to happen to thousands of soldiers.

Roos also said that the alliance between Japan and the U.S. was to become more important in the years to come.

“Our alliance will be more important over the next 50 years than it was in the last 50,” he said.

Roos also said that he understood that the U.S.-Japan relationship was as important to Tokyo as it is to Washington.

“I have no doubt that Japan is absolutely committed to the alliance between the United States and Japan,” he said.

Roos was speaking the day after Mizuho Fukushima, the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) hinted that her party may leave the governing coalition if U.S. troops were to remain in Okinawa.

In response to this, Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama reiterated his belief that the issue should be resolved only after the appropriate negotiations and considerations are completed.

The United States has consistently argued that the issue should be resolved as soon as possible and that the current agreement is the best possible solution to the Okinawa problem.

Okinawans have complained for many years about noise pollution coming from U.S. bases and crimes committed by troops. Often, politicians elected in the prefecture take the stance that they would like to see the troops leave the islands.

The issue has caused friction between Washington and Tokyo, and a working group has been set up to try to resolve the problem as soon as possible.

Strange disease kills 71 in Nigeria’s Adamawa State

December 4th, 2009

At least 71 people have been confirmed dead and other 746 lying critically ill of a yet to be diagnosed disease in northeast Nigeria’s Adamawa State, the Nigerian Tribune newspaper reported on Friday.
Bubakari Musa Kamale, state commissioner for information, confirmed the death toll, saying the nature of the disease has not been determined.
The official said the state government is waiting for the outcome of the specimen sent for analysis. The epidemic has continued unabated for the past weeks, he said, ruling out the outbreak of cholera.
“This is a strange disease that is characterized by excessive vomiting, diarrhea, high fever and in some instances, coughing,” said the commissioner.
According to Kamale, the samples have since been sent for analysis to teaching hospitals in southwest Nigeria’s Oyo State and northern Borno State, as well as to France and the United States.
He said the state government had taken measures to arrest the situation from spreading by providing drugs to the Health Ministry for administration in the affected areas.
